What is a Desktop CNC router?

A Desktop Computer Numerical Control (CNC) router is a machine that is used to cut a wide variety of materials such as aluminum, steel, wood, foam, plastic, and composites.

The machine employs the computer numerical control function for routing tool paths. There are several advantages of using CNC routers over commonly-used handheld routers. They include increased productivity, reduced wastage, and efficiency.

What can a Desktop CNC do?

A desktop CNC router depends on a computer and a design program to do its work. The design program needed to run the router is typically one that’s known as Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.

Every desktop CNC router needs a software program which users can use to draw the designs that are intended to be cut.

Desktop CNC routers also come with toolpath programs where the cutter to be used can be selected.

The cutting instructions are calculated by the CAM software, which are then encoded into a file. The router needs this file to be fed into it, following which it can cut exactly according to the instructions included in the file. Cutting is automatic.

How to get started with Desktop CNC?

To get started with a desktop CNC software, you need to first turn on your computer and initiate the Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.

Once the software is initiated, you can provide inputs based on the toolpath along with the materials that have to be cut.

For starters, it’s best to work with materials that desktop CNC routers can easily cut and create simple designs.

Once you get the hang of it, you can move on to more complex patterns and designs.

What materials can a desktop CNC router cut?

Desktop CNC routers can cut numerous materials.

Some of the most common materials that desktop CNC routers are used to cut include:

  • Foam: A durable yet lightweight material. Rigid and carving foam are the two most commonly used types of foam in CNC routers.
  • Plastics: The list of plastics used in CNC routers is too long to be stated here. But polypropylene (PP), acrylics (PMMA), acetal (POM), and polycarbonate (PC) are the most common.
  • Wood: Compared to plastics and foam, wood comparatively has a lesser variety, but the most commonly used woods include softwood, plywood, and hardwood.
  • Metals: Aluminum, steel, and brass are the most common metals used in a desktop CNC router.

Do I have to learn a programming language?

No, it’s not necessary to learn a programming language to operate a CNC router.

Difference between a desktop CNC router and a full-sized CNC router in terms of capabilities?

While the basic functions provided by a desktop CNC router and a full-sized CNC router may seem like they’re the same on paper, but in reality, there are several differences.

However, desktop CNC routers are much more affordable compared to full-sized routers.

Desktop CNC routers can also engrave soft metals such as aluminium and copper.

However, it lacks the metal cutting power of full-size routers. While its accuracy is decent, its working speed is a tad slower than that of full-size routers.

This lack of efficiency, however, won’t be an issue if you’re primarily buying the router as a hobbyist or for your home shop.

An ATC or Automatic Tool Changer is made use of in CNC router machines so that their tool carrying capacity and productivity may be increased. By quickly changing the tools, it reduces the amount of time that the CNC machine is idle and allows for easy working with various tools.

Once a tool change command is received by the machine, the tool that needs to be changed will come to the fixed ‘tool change position’ of the machine. Then, the arm of the Automatic Tool Changer will pick up the tool from this position. The arm has a gripper on each side that shifts between the magazine and turret.
